3D Paper Star decoration

White paper is a perfect medium for creating pretty impressive christmas decorations.

One of the really good points about home made decorations is that by using a specific colour range you can produce a totally themed christmas decor throughout your home. Although the cost is very low, the finished effect is anything but cheap.

The large star above is made from six pieces of ordinary A4 paper. Further down the page you will find full instructions on how to make one for yourself.

Once you have tried a few techniques for yourself, go ahead an experiment with new designs of your very own this xmas.

First lets start with an easy tree decoration. This is made from one square piece of paper. If you have A4 paper cut the strip from the end to make a square.

Fold the square, corner to corner and lay it in front of you as shown.

fold paper as shown

I have creased a vertical line down the middle too. This will help for the next stage when we make a cut. As shown below, make a cut from the bottom. Do not go all the way to the middle. Stop about a centimetre from the creased line.

cut the paper

Repeat along the bottom until you have a number of parallel cuts.

To make things clear, here are all the cut lines shown clearly in red.

repeat on other side

Now unfold the paper

Starting from the middle, fold the smallest two triangles toward each other, overlap and glue them (in this example I used sticky tape for speed, but glue gives a more professional finish).

Now turn the entire piece of paper over and glue the next two triangles together

Keep turning and gluing and in pretty much no time you will have a finished decoration

In this example we made five cuts on either side. You can try different numbers of cuts if you like.

Remember the big christmas star decoration at the top of the page? It is actually made from the same technique but just using three cuts. I simply made six of these decorations and glued them together to make the big xmas star.

The same shapes can be made using thicker card. This holds its 3d shape better but does cost more. For a really stylish decoration, make the stars from black card (start with A5 size cards) and then spray on silver glitter.

wall decorationsHere is our wall simply but effectively decorated using just 9 sheets of card. I attached the stars to the wall with blu-tack.

Two tone card also makes great christmas decorations. If you can find card where one side is blue and the other side a lighter shade of blue they can look totally amazing.
